Why Accreditations Matter When Choosing a Solar Installer

The solar panel installation industry in the UK is regulated through a system of voluntary and mandatory certifications that distinguish professional, competent installers from unqualified operators. Choosing an installer without the right accreditations can mean your system is not eligible for government incentives, your installation does not meet building regulations, and you have no formal route for complaint resolution if something goes wrong.

D&R Energy holds three of the most important accreditations in the UK renewable energy sector: MCS certification, NAPIT registration, and RECC membership. Together, these certifications guarantee that every installation we carry out meets the highest quality, safety, and consumer protection standards. They also ensure that your solar system qualifies for the Smart Export Guarantee, allowing you to earn money from surplus electricity exported to the grid.

Below, we explain each accreditation in detail so you can understand exactly what it means for you as a customer and why it should be a key factor in your decision when choosing a solar installer in Bristol, Somerset, or the wider South West.

MCS Certification (Microgeneration Certification Scheme)

The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) is the UK's national quality mark for small-scale renewable energy installations. MCS is an industry-led quality assurance scheme supported by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. It sets and maintains standards for renewable energy products and their installation, covering solar PV, battery storage, heat pumps, wind turbines, and other microgeneration technologies.

MCS certification is not optional if you want your solar installation to qualify for the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). The SEG is the government-mandated scheme that requires major energy suppliers to pay you for surplus solar electricity exported to the national grid. Only installations carried out by an MCS-certified installer are eligible for the SEG, which means choosing an uncertified installer could cost you hundreds of pounds per year in lost export payments.

To achieve and maintain MCS certification, D&R Energy undergoes regular third-party audits of our installation quality, design processes, customer service procedures, and health and safety practices. MCS assessors inspect completed installations at random to verify that our work consistently meets the required standards. Every system we install is registered on the MCS Installation Database, providing you with a permanent, verifiable record of your certified installation.

What MCS Certification Means for You

  • Your solar system qualifies for the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), earning you money from surplus electricity
  • Your installation has been designed and carried out to nationally recognised quality standards
  • D&R Energy is regularly audited by independent assessors to verify ongoing compliance
  • Your system is registered on the MCS Installation Database for permanent verification
  • MCS certification is a requirement for most local authority and government grant schemes
  • Insurance companies and mortgage lenders recognise MCS installations as properly certified

NAPIT Registration (National Association of Professional Inspectors and Testers)

NAPIT is one of the UK's leading government-approved bodies for electrical installation competence. NAPIT registration confirms that D&R Energy's electricians are fully qualified and competent to carry out electrical work that complies with Part P of the Building Regulations (Electrical Safety in Dwellings) and BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations.

Solar panel installation involves significant electrical work, including connecting panels to an inverter, wiring the inverter to your consumer unit, configuring battery storage systems, and ensuring the entire system safely interfaces with the national grid. This electrical work must be carried out by a competent person registered with a government-approved scheme like NAPIT. Without this registration, an installer cannot legally self-certify electrical work, and you would need to pay for a separate inspection by your local building control authority.

As a NAPIT-registered installer, D&R Energy can self-certify all electrical work associated with your solar PV and battery installation. This means we issue the necessary Part P notification and electrical safety certificates directly, without the need for additional inspections. You receive all the required documentation as part of your installation, ensuring your system is fully compliant from the moment it is switched on.

What NAPIT Registration Means for You

  • All electrical work is carried out by qualified, competent professionals
  • Your installation complies with Building Regulations Part P for electrical safety
  • D&R Energy self-certifies electrical work, saving you the cost of separate building control inspections
  • You receive proper electrical safety certificates and Part P notification as standard
  • NAPIT registration requires ongoing professional development and re-assessment
  • Your home insurance remains valid as all electrical work is properly certified

RECC Membership (Renewable Energy Consumer Code)

The Renewable Energy Consumer Code (RECC) is the consumer protection scheme for the domestic renewable energy sector, approved by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI). RECC membership is a mark of commitment to fair dealing, transparent pricing, and putting customers first. It provides you with a robust, independent complaints procedure and a financial guarantee that protects your deposit and advance payments.

RECC sets strict standards for how member companies must behave, covering every stage of the customer journey from initial marketing and sales through to installation, aftercare, and complaint handling. As a RECC member, D&R Energy must provide accurate, honest information in all our marketing materials and sales conversations. We must give you a clear, written quotation before you commit to anything, allow a 14-day cooling-off period after you sign a contract, and deliver our work to the agreed specification and timeline.

If you ever have a complaint about any aspect of our service that we cannot resolve directly, RECC provides an independent dispute resolution service operated by CTSI-approved mediators. This gives you a clear, formal route to resolution without needing to involve solicitors or courts. RECC also operates a financial guarantee scheme: if a RECC member company ceases trading, the scheme protects your deposit payments and can arrange for another RECC member to complete your installation.

You can verify D&R Energy's RECC membership directly on the RECC website. Our member profile is publicly available at recc.org.uk/scheme/members/00075420-dr-energy-ltd.

What RECC Membership Means for You

  • Transparent, honest pricing with no hidden costs or misleading sales tactics
  • 14-day cooling-off period after signing any contract
  • Independent dispute resolution through CTSI-approved mediators if needed
  • Financial guarantee protecting your deposit if the company ceases trading
  • RECC members are regularly audited for compliance with the Consumer Code
  • Approved by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute for consumer protection

How Our Accreditations Work Together

Each of our three accreditations covers a different aspect of what makes a trustworthy solar installer. MCS ensures the technical quality of the installation and your eligibility for government incentives. NAPIT guarantees the electrical safety and building regulation compliance of the work. RECC protects your rights as a consumer throughout the entire process.

Together, they give you comprehensive protection from start to finish. When you choose D&R Energy for your solar panel installation in Bristol, Somerset, or the wider South West, you can be confident that your system will be designed and installed to the highest standards, that all electrical work is properly certified, that you qualify for every financial incentive available, and that your consumer rights are protected by an independent, government-backed code.
