Solar Panels Designed for Your Home

D&R Energy designs residential solar systems around your home, your energy usage, and your budget. We do not believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. Every property is different and every household has unique electricity consumption patterns, which is why we offer three carefully designed packages that cover the vast majority of UK homes, from compact 2-bed terraces to spacious 4+ bed detached houses.

Each of our residential packages includes premium Jinko Solar or Exiom solar panels, a Growatt or FoxESS hybrid inverter, and a FoxESS Cube battery. We include battery storage as standard in every package because it transforms a good investment into an outstanding one. Solar panels alone typically save 30-50% on electricity bills, but adding a battery increases that saving to 60-95% by storing your free solar energy for use in the evening when household demand is highest.

All our residential installations benefit from 0% VAT until at least March 2027, which reduces the cost of a typical 4.5kWp system by approximately £1,500 compared to the standard 20% VAT rate. Our systems are MCS certified, making you eligible for the Smart Export Guarantee that pays you for surplus electricity exported to the grid. With the South West generating between 950 and 1,100 kWh per kWp annually, your home solar system will produce more electricity than almost anywhere else in the UK.

Which Package Is Right for Your Home?

Starter Package (3.6kW) - 2-3 Bed Homes

The Starter package is designed for smaller homes including 2-3 bed terraced houses, semi-detached properties, and bungalows with moderate electricity usage. With 9 Jinko Solar or Exiom panels, a 3kW inverter, and a 5.12kWh FoxESS Cube battery, this system generates enough electricity to cover the typical consumption of a couple or small family.

A 3.6kW system in the South West will generate approximately 3,400-3,960 kWh of electricity per year. Combined with the 5.12kWh battery for evening use, you can expect to save 30-45% on your annual electricity bill. This package is particularly popular in areas like Portishead, Clevedon, and the Victorian terraces of Bristol's Bedminster and Southville, where roof space may be more limited but south-facing aspects are common.

Family Package (4.5kW) - 3-4 Bed Homes

Our most popular package, the Family system suits the typical 3-4 bed semi-detached or detached home that makes up the bulk of the South West's housing stock. With 12 panels, a 3kW inverter, and a 5.12kWh battery, it generates significantly more electricity than the Starter while maintaining an accessible price point.

At 4.5kW, this system will produce approximately 4,275-4,950 kWh per year in the South West, which is close to the average UK household's annual electricity consumption. With battery storage capturing surplus generation for evening use, the Family package delivers bill savings of 70-80%. This is the package we most commonly install across Nailsea, Weston-super-Mare, Bath, and the 1930s semis that characterise so many South West towns.

Premium Package (6.3-7kW) - 4+ Bed Homes

The Premium package is designed for larger homes with higher electricity consumption. With 18 panels, an 8kW inverter, and a generous 13kWh battery, this system can cover the energy needs of a busy family home including high-consumption appliances, home offices, electric vehicle charging, and hot water heating.

A 6.3-7kW system in the South West generates between 5,985 and 7,700 kWh per year, and the large 13kWh battery ensures very little of that energy is wasted. Bill savings of 80-95% are realistic with this package, especially when combined with a smart tariff for overnight grid charging. The Premium package is popular with larger detached properties in areas like Portishead's Nore Road, Clevedon's seafront, Bath's Combe Down, and the executive homes of South Gloucestershire.

Is Your Home Suitable for Solar Panels?

The vast majority of homes in Bristol and Somerset are suitable for solar panels. Modern solar technology works effectively with a wide range of roof orientations, pitches, and sizes. While a south-facing roof at a 30-35 degree pitch is technically optimal, east and west-facing roofs still generate around 85% of the output of a south-facing system, which is more than enough to deliver excellent financial returns.

During your free property survey, our MCS-certified surveyor will assess your roof's orientation, pitch, available space, and any shading from nearby trees, buildings, or chimneys. We use specialist software to model your system's expected output based on your specific property, giving you an accurate projection of energy generation and bill savings before you commit to anything.

Property Types We Regularly Install On

Victorian and Edwardian terraced houses
1930s semi-detached homes
Post-war estates and council-built properties
Modern new-build developments
Detached family homes
Bungalows (single and double storey)
Barn conversions and rural properties
Dormer and loft-converted properties

Most domestic solar panel installations fall under permitted development rights and do not require planning permission. Exceptions include listed buildings, properties in conservation areas, and panels that would project significantly above the roofline. D&R Energy handles all planning enquiries on your behalf and will advise you during the survey if any special permissions are required. If your property is in a conservation area in places like Bath, Clifton, or Clevedon, we have experience designing installations that meet conservation officer requirements.

Making Home Solar Affordable

The upfront cost of a home solar system is the most common concern we hear from homeowners, and it is completely understandable. However, solar panels are a genuine investment that pays for itself and then delivers decades of free electricity. A typical 4.5kWp system in the Bristol area costs approximately £7,613 including installation and 0% VAT. With current electricity prices, that investment pays for itself within 5 to 8 years for solar-only systems, or 4 to 7 years when paired with battery storage and a smart tariff.

After the payback period, your solar panels continue generating free electricity for the remaining 20+ years of their lifespan. Over a 25-year period, a well-designed solar and battery system can save a typical household tens of thousands of pounds in electricity costs. The 0% VAT rate, available until March 2027, makes this the most financially attractive time to invest in home solar panels.

Home Solar FAQs

A typical 4.5kWp domestic solar PV system in the Bristol area costs approximately £7,600 including installation and 0% VAT. Smaller 3.6kW systems for 2-3 bed homes start from less, while larger 6-7kW systems for 4+ bed properties cost more. D&R Energy provides free, no-obligation quotes with transparent pricing based on a property survey.

Most homes require 9-18 solar panels depending on electricity usage, roof size, and orientation. A 2-3 bed home typically suits a 9-panel 3.6kW system, a 3-4 bed home works well with 12 panels (4.5kW), and larger 4+ bed properties benefit from an 18-panel system generating 6-7kW. D&R Energy designs every system individually based on a detailed property survey.

The South West of England receives the highest solar irradiance in the UK! Solar panels in Bristol and Somerset consistently generate 950-1,100 kWh per kWp annually — up to 15% more than the national average. Even on cloudy days, modern panels produce significant electricity from diffuse daylight.

We install premium Jinko Solar and Exiom panels, paired with Growatt inverters. These are tier-1 manufacturers chosen for their proven reliability, efficiency, and performance in UK conditions. All our installations are MCS certified.

With current electricity prices and 0% VAT, most domestic solar PV systems in the Bristol area pay for themselves in 5-8 years. Adding battery storage and using a smart export tariff can reduce this to 4-6 years. After payback, your electricity is essentially free for the remaining 25+ year lifespan.
