Solar PV
A typical 4.5kWp domestic solar PV system in the Bristol area costs approximately £7,600 including installation and 0% VAT. Smaller 3.6kW systems for 2-3 bed homes start from less, while larger 6-7kW systems for 4+ bed properties cost more. D&R Energy provides free, no-obligation quotes with transparent pricing based on a property survey.
Most homes require 9-18 solar panels depending on electricity usage, roof size, and orientation. A 2-3 bed home typically suits a 9-panel 3.6kW system, a 3-4 bed home works well with 12 panels (4.5kW), and larger 4+ bed properties benefit from an 18-panel system generating 6-7kW. D&R Energy designs every system individually based on a detailed property survey.
The South West of England receives the highest solar irradiance in the UK! Solar panels in Bristol and Somerset consistently generate 950-1,100 kWh per kWp annually — up to 15% more than the national average. Even on cloudy days, modern panels produce significant electricity from diffuse daylight.
We install premium Jinko Solar and Exiom panels, paired with Growatt and GivEnergy inverters. These are tier-1 manufacturers chosen for their proven reliability, efficiency, and performance in UK conditions. All our installations are MCS certified.
With current electricity prices and 0% VAT, most domestic solar PV systems in the Bristol area pay for themselves in 5-8 years. Adding battery storage and using a smart export tariff can reduce this to 4-6 years. After payback, your electricity is essentially free for the remaining 25+ year lifespan.
Yes — since April 2022, solar panels, battery storage, and other energy-saving materials are zero-rated for VAT in the UK. This 0% VAT rate applies until at least March 2027, saving you around £1,200-£1,800 compared to the standard 20% rate.
Most domestic solar panel installations fall under permitted development rights and do not require planning permission. Exceptions include listed buildings, conservation areas, and panels that project significantly above the roofline. D&R Energy handles all planning enquiries and will advise you during the survey.
The Smart Export Guarantee is a government-mandated scheme that pays you for surplus solar electricity exported to the grid. Rates vary by energy supplier. When combined with battery storage and a smart tariff, you can maximise the value of every kWh your solar panels generate.
D&R Energy follows a four-step process: consultation, property survey, custom design, then installation. The installation itself typically takes 1-2 days for a standard domestic system. From initial contact to completed installation is usually within 4 weeks.
Battery Storage
We strongly recommend battery storage. Solar-only systems typically save 30-50% on electricity bills because you can only use solar power during daylight hours. Adding a battery increases savings to 60-95% because you store daytime solar generation for evening use, and can take advantage of cheap overnight tariff rates.
We install GivEnergy and Tesla Powerwall battery systems. GivEnergy offers excellent value with hybrid inverters that integrate seamlessly with solar PV. Tesla Powerwall provides premium whole-home backup capability. Both systems can be monitored via smartphone apps.
GivEnergy battery prices installed: 2.6kWh from £2,500–£3,200; 5.2kWh from £3,800–£4,500; 9.5kWh from £5,500–£7,000; 13.5kWh All-in-One from £7,000–£9,000. Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5kWh) costs £7,500–£10,000+ installed. All battery storage installed with solar panels qualifies for 0% VAT until March 2027. Contact D&R Energy for a personalised quote.
Yes — a home battery on a smart tariff can save £400–£800 per year even without solar. On Octopus Go (7.5p/kWh overnight, 24.5p peak), a 9.5kWh GivEnergy battery charged overnight and discharged during peak hours saves approximately £590/year. Payback is 9–12 years. With solar panels added later, savings increase dramatically.
The best smart tariffs for solar and battery owners in 2026 are: Octopus Agile Export (3–31p/kWh variable, average ~15p — best SEG rate), Octopus Flux (import and export with time-of-use pricing), and Octopus Go (7.5p/kWh overnight charging for 5 hours). D&R Energy recommends pairing GivEnergy or Tesla Powerwall with Octopus Flux or Agile for maximum annual savings of £600–£900+.
Yes — battery storage can be retrofitted to virtually any existing solar PV system. D&R Energy can assess your current setup and recommend the best battery solution, whether that is a GivEnergy system that integrates with your existing inverter or a Tesla Powerwall with its own built-in inverter.
Yes — both GivEnergy and Tesla Powerwall systems can provide backup power during grid outages. The system detects the outage and switches to battery power automatically. The duration of backup depends on your battery capacity and energy consumption.
Round-trip efficiency measures how much of the energy stored in a battery you actually get back when you use it. GivEnergy batteries achieve approximately 95% round-trip efficiency, meaning you lose only around 5% of energy to the charging and discharging process. Tesla Powerwall achieves a similar 90-92% round-trip efficiency. Both are among the best in the industry.
GivEnergy and Tesla Powerwall batteries are designed to last 10-15 years and are typically warrantied for 10 years or a specified number of cycles. After the warranty period, the battery will still function but may have slightly reduced capacity. Solar panels typically last 25-30 years, so you may replace the battery once during the lifetime of your solar system.
Yes — this is one of the most powerful features of modern home batteries. With tariffs like Octopus Go or Agile, electricity can cost as little as 7-10p/kWh overnight. You can program your GivEnergy or Tesla Powerwall to charge from the grid during cheap overnight periods and use that stored electricity during expensive peak hours, saving significantly even without solar generation.
EV Chargers
Yes — and this is one of the smartest energy combinations available. A Zappi EV charger from myenergi can be set to charge only when surplus solar electricity is available, meaning you charge your car for free. Combined with battery storage, you can store solar during the day and charge overnight from stored energy.
We install the Zappi charger from myenergi — the UK's leading smart EV charger designed specifically for solar integration. The Zappi can automatically detect and use surplus solar electricity to charge your EV, maximising your free energy usage.
A Zappi EV charger typically costs £800-£1,500 fully installed, depending on the electrical work required. If you are adding it alongside a solar PV and battery installation, D&R Energy can offer competitive package pricing.
No — you can install a Zappi EV charger without solar panels and still benefit from its smart features, including scheduled off-peak charging using cheap overnight tariff electricity. However, pairing the Zappi with solar panels and a battery gives you the maximum benefit: free solar-powered car charging during the day and cheap grid charging overnight.
The Zappi is a 7.4kW single-phase Type 2 charger, which can add approximately 30 miles of range per hour of charging. In pure solar mode, charging speed depends on how much surplus solar electricity is available — typically 1.4kW to 7kW depending on sunlight. In fast charge mode, it draws the full 7.4kW from the grid for maximum speed.
The OZEV EV chargepoint grant for domestic properties ended in April 2022 for most homeowners. However, grants are still available for people living in flats and for those installing chargers at rental properties. D&R Energy can advise you on current eligibility during your initial consultation.
Yes — the Zappi charger uses a standard Type 2 connector and is compatible with all modern electric vehicles sold in the UK, including Tesla, BMW, Volkswagen, Nissan, Kia, Hyundai, Ford, and every other EV brand. Tesla vehicles require the Type 2 adapter supplied with the car.
Commercial Solar
Businesses can claim the Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) of up to £1 million, allowing full tax relief on solar installations in the year of purchase. The 50% First-Year Allowance is also available. Combined with 0% VAT, the effective cost of commercial solar is significantly reduced.
Commercial solar PV installations typically achieve payback within 3-5 years, depending on system size, energy consumption patterns, and available tax incentives. After payback, daytime electricity is essentially free for the remaining 25+ year system life.
Yes — we design and install commercial solar PV systems for businesses across Bristol, Somerset, and the wider South West. Our team handles everything from initial energy audits and system design through to grid connection applications and installation.
Grants
ECO4 was a government-backed scheme providing funded solar panels and heat pumps for eligible low-income households. The ECO4 scheme closed in March 2026 and is no longer accepting applications. It has been replaced by the Warm Homes: Local Grant, which offers up to £15,000 for eligible households. Contact D&R Energy for a free eligibility check on current schemes.
The Warm Homes: Local Grant is the primary replacement for ECO4, offering up to £15,000 for energy improvements including solar panels for households with incomes below approximately £36,000 and EPC ratings of D–G. The government's Warm Homes Plan Loan — offering 0% interest to all homeowners — is also launching in 2026/27. Call D&R Energy on 0800 772 0758 for a free eligibility check.
To qualify for the Warm Homes: Local Grant, your household income should be below approximately £36,000 per year and your property must have an EPC rating of D, E, F, or G. You must also own your home or be renting with landlord consent. The grant covers up to £15,000 towards solar panels, heat pumps, insulation, and other measures. D&R Energy can check your eligibility free of charge.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides a £7,500 government grant towards an air source heat pump installation, replacing your gas or oil boiler. To be eligible, your property must have a valid EPC with no outstanding insulation recommendations. The grant is paid directly to your installer and reduces your upfront cost. D&R Energy can handle the full application process as part of your heat pump installation.
Landlords can access the Warm Homes: Local Grant for eligible tenants in privately rented properties (EPC D–G, tenant income below ~£36,000). There is no separate grant for market-rate landlords, but solar panels offer strong returns: higher rents (5–10%), shorter voids, MEES compliance, Smart Export Guarantee income, and capital appreciation. D&R Energy advises landlords across Bristol and Somerset on the best approach for their portfolio.
0% VAT applies to solar panels, inverters, and battery storage when installed as part of a solar PV system. EV chargers and air source heat pumps are not currently zero-rated and are subject to 20% VAT. The 0% VAT on solar and battery storage is confirmed until at least March 2027.
Yes — Lendology CIC offers interest-free (or low-interest) loans for home energy improvements including solar panels and battery storage for homeowners in Somerset, Bath & North East Somerset, and North Somerset. Loan amounts up to approximately £15,000 are available. D&R Energy can refer you to Lendology as part of your installation planning.
Off-gas properties — homes not connected to the mains gas grid — may be eligible for additional support under the Warm Homes: Local Grant. These homes, often heated by oil or LPG, are ideal candidates for combined solar and heat pump installations with grant funding. D&R Energy specialises in off-gas property renewable energy solutions.
Heat Pumps
An air source heat pump extracts heat energy from outdoor air — even at temperatures as low as -20°C — and uses it to heat your home and hot water. It works like a refrigerator in reverse: a refrigerant fluid absorbs heat from outside air, is compressed to increase its temperature, then transfers that heat to your central heating and hot water system. For every 1 unit of electricity used, a heat pump typically produces 3-4 units of heat energy.
Air source heat pumps work best in well-insulated homes with underfloor heating or large radiators, as they operate at lower flow temperatures than gas boilers (typically 45-55°C vs 70-80°C for a gas boiler). Most modern UK homes are suitable. D&R Energy carries out a full heat loss calculation survey to determine whether a heat pump is right for your property and what modifications, if any, are needed.
Yes — and this is an excellent combination. Your solar panels generate free electricity during the day, which can power your heat pump directly, dramatically reducing your heating costs. A battery storage system allows you to store surplus solar energy and run the heat pump on stored power in the evening. This combination can reduce your home heating costs by 70-80% compared to a gas boiler.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) provides a £7,500 grant towards an air source heat pump installation. The grant is paid directly to your installer (D&R Energy) and reduces your upfront cost. Eligibility requires a valid EPC with no outstanding cavity wall or loft insulation recommendations. D&R Energy handles the full grant application as part of the installation service.
Running costs depend on your electricity tariff, property insulation, and local climate. A typical UK home replacing a gas boiler with an air source heat pump and using a standard electricity tariff will spend broadly similar amounts on energy. However, pairing the heat pump with solar panels and a heat pump tariff (such as Octopus Cosy) can reduce annual heating costs by 50-70% compared to a gas boiler. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant significantly improves the financial payback.
