Your Solar Installation: Step by Step

Every D&R Energy installation follows the same rigorous process, ensuring quality, compliance, and complete customer confidence at every stage.

01

Free Consultation & Initial Quote

Day 1

Your solar journey begins with a free, no-obligation consultation. Call us on 0800 772 0758 or complete our online form. During this initial conversation, we discuss your energy goals, typical monthly electricity usage, roof characteristics you are aware of, and your budget. We will give you a ballpark estimate for your property type and answer any questions you have.

  • Discuss energy goals and current bills
  • Understand your property and roof type
  • Explain available packages and options
  • Provide an indicative price range
  • Arrange a convenient survey date
02

Professional Property Survey

Days 3–7

A qualified D&R Energy surveyor visits your property at a time that suits you. The survey typically takes 45–90 minutes and covers every aspect of your property relevant to a solar installation. We assess your roof structure, orientation, pitch, and condition; carry out a detailed shading analysis using professional tools; inspect your consumer unit and electrical installation; measure roof dimensions and map out the optimal panel placement; and assess any cable routing requirements.

  • Full roof structural and condition assessment
  • Shading analysis using professional surveying tools
  • Consumer unit and electrical capacity inspection
  • Precise roof measurement and panel layout mapping
  • Cable routing and inverter location planning
  • Planning and permitted development assessment
03

Custom System Design

Days 7–10

Using the survey data, our design team creates a bespoke solar system specification for your property. Every system is designed individually — we do not use template configurations. The design includes the precise panel layout, inverter specification, battery capacity recommendation, cabling plan, and generation and savings projections based on your specific roof orientation, shading profile, and electricity usage patterns.

  • Bespoke panel layout for your exact roof
  • Inverter and battery specification
  • Generation forecast based on your orientation and postcode
  • Annual savings projection with and without battery
  • Full itemised quote with no hidden costs
  • Finance options clearly presented
04

Quote Approval & Scheduling

Days 10–14

Once you have reviewed and approved your personalised quote, we confirm your installation date and begin preparing your system. We order the specific equipment for your installation, confirm scaffolding requirements and book the scaffolding contractor if needed, and submit the DNO (Distribution Network Operator) pre-notification if required for your system size. Most systems are installed within 2–4 weeks of quote approval.

  • Equipment ordered specifically for your system
  • Installation date confirmed
  • Scaffolding arranged if required
  • DNO pre-notification submitted if required
  • All paperwork prepared in advance
05

Installation Day

1–2 Days

Our installation team arrives at the agreed time and carries out the full solar PV installation. A standard domestic system takes 1–2 days to complete. The team erects scaffolding if required, installs the roof mounting brackets and rails, mounts the solar panels, runs all cabling through the property to the consumer unit location, installs the inverter (and battery if included), and connects and tests the entire system before leaving.

  • Scaffolding erected if required (day prior or same day)
  • Roof mounting system installed
  • Solar panels mounted and clamped
  • Internal cabling and conduit installed neatly
  • Inverter and battery installed in agreed location
  • System commissioned, tested, and verified
  • All work areas cleaned and left tidy
06

MCS Certification & DNO Notification

Days 2–5 Post-Installation

After installation, D&R Energy handles all post-installation paperwork on your behalf. We issue your MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) certificate within 5 working days of installation completion. This certificate is essential for registering for the Smart Export Guarantee. We also complete the formal DNO notification and provide you with all the documentation you need for building regulations, insurance purposes, and future property sales.

  • MCS certificate issued within 5 working days
  • DNO formal notification submitted
  • Building regulations notification if required
  • All warranty documentation provided
  • Smart Export Guarantee registration guidance
07

Handover & System Walkthrough

Installation Day or Day After

Before leaving your property, we walk you through your new system in full. We show you how to monitor generation and consumption through the inverter or battery app (available on iOS and Android), explain what different system modes mean, show you how to set up automated overnight grid charging if you have a battery, and answer any questions you have about maximising your savings. You will leave the handover confident in operating your new system.

  • Full system operation walkthrough
  • App setup and monitoring explained
  • Battery charging schedules configured
  • Smart Export Guarantee registration guidance
  • Ongoing support contact details provided

How Long Does Solar Installation Take?

From your first contact with D&R Energy to the day your solar panels start generating electricity, the typical timeline is approximately 4 weeks. This includes the initial consultation, property survey, system design, equipment ordering, and installation. The installation itself — the physical work at your property — takes 1–2 days for a standard domestic system.

Some customers choose to take additional time to review quotes and make their decision, which is completely fine — there is no pressure to commit quickly. Once you confirm the order, we typically schedule installation within 2 weeks. During busy periods (spring and summer), lead times may extend slightly.

Common Questions About the Installation Process

A typical 4.5kWp domestic solar PV system in the Bristol area costs approximately £7,600 including installation and 0% VAT. Smaller 3.6kW systems for 2-3 bed homes start from less, while larger 6-7kW systems for 4+ bed properties cost more. D&R Energy provides free, no-obligation quotes with transparent pricing based on a property survey.

Most homes require 9-18 solar panels depending on electricity usage, roof size, and orientation. A 2-3 bed home typically suits a 9-panel 3.6kW system, a 3-4 bed home works well with 12 panels (4.5kW), and larger 4+ bed properties benefit from an 18-panel system generating 6-7kW. D&R Energy designs every system individually based on a detailed property survey.

The South West of England receives the highest solar irradiance in the UK! Solar panels in Bristol and Somerset consistently generate 950-1,100 kWh per kWp annually — up to 15% more than the national average. Even on cloudy days, modern panels produce significant electricity from diffuse daylight.

We install premium Jinko Solar and Exiom panels, paired with Growatt and GivEnergy inverters. These are tier-1 manufacturers chosen for their proven reliability, efficiency, and performance in UK conditions. All our installations are MCS certified.

With current electricity prices and 0% VAT, most domestic solar PV systems in the Bristol area pay for themselves in 5-8 years. Adding battery storage and using a smart export tariff can reduce this to 4-6 years. After payback, your electricity is essentially free for the remaining 25+ year lifespan.

Yes — since April 2022, solar panels, battery storage, and other energy-saving materials are zero-rated for VAT in the UK. This 0% VAT rate applies until at least March 2027, saving you around £1,200-£1,800 compared to the standard 20% rate.
