Solar Energy in the Bristol Area
The Bristol area represents the largest and most dynamic market for solar PV installations in the South West of England. Encompassing Bristol city itself, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire, and Bath and North East Somerset, this region is home to over 900,000 people and hundreds of thousands of households, the vast majority of which do not yet have solar panels installed. D&R Energy is headquartered in Portishead at A&W Buildings on Newfoundland Way, placing us at the very heart of this region and enabling us to provide the fastest survey and installation response times for homeowners across the wider Bristol area.
Bristol holds a unique and pioneering position in UK climate policy. In November 2018, Bristol City Council became the very first council in the United Kingdom to declare a climate emergency, setting the tone for the hundreds of local authorities that followed. In 2015, Bristol was named European Green Capital, the only UK city ever to receive this prestigious honour, recognising the city's commitment to sustainable development, green infrastructure, and environmental innovation. The council originally set a carbon neutral target of 2025 for its own corporate operations and a city-wide net zero target of 2030, among the most ambitious in the country.
Despite this leadership, the opportunity for solar PV in Bristol remains remarkably underexploited. Only 3.94% of Bristol homes currently have MCS-certified solar installations, which is below the national average of 4.5%. This means that over 96% of the city's 191,638 households still do not have solar panels, representing a massive untapped market. Over 120,000 Bristol properties are rated below EPC C, and 75% still rely on mains gas heating. These statistics point to an enormous opportunity for homeowners to reduce their energy bills and carbon footprint through solar PV and battery storage.
Bristol's City Leap partnership — a £1 billion+ clean energy joint venture signed with Ameresco in January 2023, with Vattenfall Heat UK as essential subcontractor — is actively driving renewable energy deployment across the city. The five-year business plan (2024–2029) targets 182 MW of zero-carbon energy generation, enough to power approximately 70,000 homes, and includes a Neighbourhood Warm Homes Retrofit Programme offering insulation, solar panels, and heat pumps for residents earning under £36,000. A flagship Resilience Network pilot is beginning with 100 homes with a long-term goal of 25,000 Bristol rooftops — making City Leap one of the most ambitious urban solar programmes in the UK. For homeowners considering solar, City Leap's active deployment reinforces that solar is a sound investment backed by both local and national government policy.
Climate Targets Across the Bristol Area
Every local authority in the Bristol area has declared a climate emergency and adopted ambitious net zero targets. Bristol City Council leads with its 2030 city-wide net zero target, backed by the City Leap partnership and extensive investment in renewable energy infrastructure. North Somerset Council declared its climate emergency in February 2019 and has set a net zero target of 2030 for both its own operations and the wider district. Notably, North Somerset recorded the highest Solar Together registration rates in the West of England, demonstrating that residents in Portishead, Clevedon, Nailsea, and Weston-super-Mare are actively seeking solar PV installations.
Bath and North East Somerset Council declared a climate emergency in March 2019 and has adopted one of the most pioneering planning policies in the country. B&NES was the first English council to adopt an energy-based net zero housing policy requiring all new builds to be 100% operational energy self-sufficient. The council's Journey to Net Zero roadmap targets 2030 and actively promotes solar PV, battery storage, and heat pump installations for existing homes. South Gloucestershire Council has also declared a climate emergency with a 2030 net zero target for its own operations, and supports renewable energy installations through planning policy across Yate, Thornbury, and the wider district.
This consistent political commitment to decarbonisation across all four unitary authorities means that homeowners in the Bristol area can install solar panels with confidence, knowing that their local council actively supports renewable energy. Combined with national incentives including the 0% VAT rate on domestic solar installations until at least March 2027 and the Smart Export Guarantee that pays for surplus electricity exported to the grid, the policy environment for solar in the Bristol area has never been more favourable.
Property Types in the Bristol Area
The Bristol area's housing stock is extraordinarily diverse, reflecting centuries of urban growth and suburban expansion. Bristol city itself is dominated by Victorian and Edwardian terraced houses, which make up 32.1% of all homes, the highest proportion of any major South West city. These terraces are concentrated in areas like Bedminster, Southville, Easton, St Andrews, and Totterdown, and often feature south-facing rear roof slopes that are ideal for solar panels. The city also has significant stocks of 1930s semi-detached homes in Knowle, Filton, Horfield, and Henleaze, plus modern new-build developments at Hengrove Park and the Temple Quarter.
North Somerset offers a contrasting but equally promising housing landscape. Portishead, our home town, has grown enormously with the Port Marine and Ashlands developments bringing thousands of modern family homes with contemporary roof designs well-suited to solar. Clevedon features handsome Victorian and Edwardian villas along the seafront, while Nailsea is characterised by 1960s-70s family housing estates with generous roof areas. Weston-super-Mare, the largest town in North Somerset at approximately 80,000 people, has diverse housing from Victorian seafront terraces to extensive 1930s semis in Worle and Milton, plus modern estates at Locking Parklands.
Bath presents unique opportunities alongside its famous Georgian architecture. While the UNESCO World Heritage city centre requires sensitive installation approaches for conservation areas, the surrounding suburbs including Combe Down, Odd Down, Batheaston, and Bathampton feature substantial post-war and modern housing with excellent solar potential. The B&NES area beyond Bath includes Keynsham, with its significant Somerdale redevelopment, and Midsomer Norton and Radstock in the south of the district. South Gloucestershire's Yate offers predominantly 1960s-70s semi-detached and detached family homes with good roof configurations, complemented by modern new-build estates. Across the entire Bristol area, the South West's superior solar irradiance of 950 to 1,100 kWh per kWp means every installation generates up to 15% more electricity than the national average.
