FoxESS Cube vs Tesla Powerwall: Which Battery Should You Choose?

D&R Energy

When it comes to home battery storage in 2026, two systems stand out for domestic installations: FoxESS Cube and Tesla Powerwall. Both use LFP (lithium iron phosphate) chemistry and are built to last, but they take quite different approaches to home energy storage. As MCS-certified installers of both systems, D&R Energy is uniquely placed to give you an honest, unbiased comparison to help you choose the right battery for your home.

Overview: Two Different Approaches

The FoxESS Cube is a modular battery system: each module provides 2.88kWh of usable storage, and you can stack modules to reach up to 41.94kWh — the most scalable system in our range. Tesla, on the other hand, offers the Powerwall 3 as a single 13.5kWh unit with a built-in solar inverter and whole-home backup capability as standard.

Both batteries integrate seamlessly with solar PV systems and are designed to store surplus solar energy for use in the evening and overnight. However, the differences in capacity, pricing, features, and expandability mean that the best choice depends on your specific situation. Visit our battery storage page for more information about the systems we install.

Capacity and Modularity

FoxESS Cube

The FoxESS Cube starts at 2.88kWh per module and can be stacked up to 41.94kWh. The key advantage is genuine modularity: you start with the capacity you need today and add more modules as your needs grow — whether that means a growing family, an EV in the driveway, or a heat pump. For most 2-4 bed homes, two or three modules provide an excellent balance of storage and cost, with room to expand.

Tesla Powerwall 3

The Tesla Powerwall 3 comes as a single 13.5kWh unit with a built-in 11.5kW solar inverter, eliminating the need for a separate inverter on new installations. This larger capacity means it can store more surplus solar energy and is better suited to homes with higher energy consumption or those wanting whole-home backup capability as a priority.

Price Comparison

The FoxESS Cube is the more affordable entry point, and its modular design means you can start with less capacity and expand later. The Tesla Powerwall commands a premium, reflecting its larger fixed capacity, built-in inverter, and whole-home backup features. Both benefit from 0% VAT when installed alongside solar panels.

  • FoxESS Cube (2.88kWh per module): Lower entry cost, stackable to 41.94kWh, works with existing inverters.
  • Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5kWh): Higher upfront cost, built-in inverter, whole-home backup included.

When comparing on a cost-per-kWh basis, the FoxESS Cube typically offers better value at smaller and medium capacities. However, the Powerwall's integrated design and backup features can justify the premium for homeowners who value those capabilities.

App Experience and Smart Features

FoxESS App

The FoxESS app provides detailed real-time monitoring of your solar generation, battery charge level, home consumption, and grid import/export. You can set charging schedules, configure tariff rates to take advantage of off-peak electricity, and view historical data. The app supports time-of-use tariff management so you can charge cheaply overnight and discharge during peak hours.

Tesla App

The Tesla app is sleek and well-designed, offering real-time monitoring of solar production, battery status, and home energy usage. It includes features like Storm Watch, which automatically reserves battery capacity when severe weather is forecast, and the ability to set your preferred operating mode (self-powered, time-based control, or backup only). The Tesla app benefits from Tesla's broader ecosystem and is particularly appealing to existing Tesla vehicle owners.

Warranty and Lifespan

  • FoxESS Cube: 10-year warranty, LFP chemistry rated to 6,000+ cycles. Battery capacity guaranteed to retain at least 80% over the warranty period.
  • Tesla Powerwall 3: 10-year warranty with unlimited cycle guarantee. Battery capacity guaranteed to retain at least 70% at end of warranty. Expected lifespan of 15-20+ years.

Both warranties are comprehensive and reflect the confidence each manufacturer has in their products. The FoxESS Cube's higher capacity retention guarantee gives it a marginal edge on paper, though both batteries are built to last well beyond their warranty periods with proper use.

Whole-Home Backup

This is one area where the Tesla Powerwall has a clear advantage. The Powerwall 3 includes built-in whole-home backup capability as standard, meaning your home will automatically switch to battery power during a grid outage. The FoxESS Cube supports backup functionality but may require additional configuration; for whole-home backup as a priority requirement, we typically recommend the Powerwall.

Which Battery Should You Choose?

Choose FoxESS Cube if: you want excellent value for money, prefer a modular system you can expand over time, have a smaller to medium-sized home, or already have a compatible inverter and want to retrofit battery storage.

Choose Tesla Powerwall if: you want maximum storage capacity in a single integrated unit, need whole-home backup during power cuts, prefer an all-in-one system with built-in solar inverter, or are already part of the Tesla ecosystem.
