Across Bristol, Bath, Weston-super-Mare, and the wider South West, the 1930s semi-detached house is ubiquitous. Built between the wars in vast numbers, these homes share a distinctive character: bay windows, hipped roofs, generous south or south-west facing rear slopes, and solid brick construction. They are also, in our experience at D&R Energy, one of the best property types for solar panels.
Why 1930s Semis Are Perfect for Solar
Several characteristics of 1930s semi-detached houses make them particularly suitable for solar panel installation:
- Roof orientation: The majority of 1930s semis in the South West have rear slopes facing south or south-west, which is optimal for solar generation. Street-facing front slopes typically face north or north-east and are not used for solar, so the rear roof area is our primary focus.
- Roof size: The semi-detached format gives a generous roof footprint — typically 40–60m² of usable rear slope — easily accommodating 10–16 panels (4–6kW) without crowding.
- Roof pitch: The standard 40–45° pitch of 1930s roofs is slightly steeper than optimal (30–35°) but still within the excellent performance range. In the South West's high-irradiance climate, the difference is marginal.
- Tile type: Most 1930s semis have concrete or clay interlocking tiles that are compatible with standard in-roof and on-roof solar mounting systems.
- No shared gable: Unlike terraced houses, semi-detached properties have a gable wall — providing installers with easier scaffolding access to the rear roof slope.
Recommended System Size for 1930s Semis
Based on our installations across the South West, the optimal system for a typical 3-bedroom 1930s semi is:
- 12 x Jinko Solar Tiger Neo 430W panels = 5.16kW peak
- Growatt 5kW Inverter
- FoxESS Cube 8.64kWh Battery (3 modules)
- Annual generation estimate (South West): approximately 4,900–5,700 kWh
- Self-consumption with battery: approximately 75–85%
- Annual bill saving: approximately £850–£1,200 at current electricity prices
For 1930s semis with 4 occupants or an electric vehicle, we often recommend stepping up to a 16-panel (6.9kW) system, which generates 6,500–7,600 kWh/year — enough to power the home and provide significant free EV charging.
Real Savings: Before and After
A typical 3-bedroom 1930s semi in Bristol or North Somerset with two adults and one child uses approximately 3,200–3,800 kWh of electricity per year. Before solar, at 24.5p/kWh, this costs approximately £784–£931 per year in electricity (not including gas).
After installing a 12-panel, 5kW system with FoxESS Cube battery:
- Annual generation: approximately 4,750–5,500 kWh
- Self-consumed (75%): approximately 3,560–4,125 kWh — more than the home's total demand
- Exported to grid: 600–1,000 kWh × 15p (Octopus) = £90–£150/year income
- Grid import cost: near zero for electricity during solar season, modest winter top-up
- Total annual saving: approximately £700–£950 on electricity bill + £90–£150 SEG income
- Net annual benefit: approximately £800–£1,100
Common Questions for 1930s Semi Owners
Are original roof tiles suitable for solar panels? Usually yes. Most 1930s concrete and clay tiles are in good condition if the roof has been maintained. Our surveyor inspects the tile condition and battens before installation. If tiles need replacing on sections of the roof, we can coordinate with a roofer prior to installation.
Does the chimney cause shading problems? Many 1930s semis have a chimney on the rear slope. Our system design software models the shade cast by the chimney at different times of day and year. We position panels to avoid the shade impact zone, or use microinverters / DC optimisers to minimise the effect if panels near the chimney cannot be avoided.
Do I need planning permission? Almost certainly not. 1930s semis are rarely in conservation areas or listed, and standard Permitted Development rules apply: panels must not project more than 200mm from the roof surface and must not exceed the highest point of the roof. Both conditions are standard on rear slope installations.
