South Gloucestershire is one of the best places in the South West to install solar panels in 2026. The combination of 1970s–90s open-plan estates in Yate, modern family homes in Bradley Stoke, and an unusually supportive local council produces some of the fastest payback periods in our entire service area.
Why South Gloucestershire Properties Generate Well
Yate was built to a 1960s Radburn-model master plan — roads curve through the estate, but individual house plots almost always face south or south-west across open back gardens. Bradley Stoke, designed from the 1980s onward, has the same open-aspect advantage. The result is that most homes in BS32, BS34, and BS37 have unshaded rear pitches at optimum angles for solar generation, with no conservation or heritage constraints.
Ladden Garden Village Battery Retrofits
Barratt and David Wilson Homes have included PV on many of the 2,450 homes at Ladden Garden Village, Yate. The challenge: developer solar is typically installed without a battery, so self-consumption rarely exceeds 40% and much of the generation is exported cheaply. A battery retrofit — typically a FoxESS EP Cube, GivEnergy All-in-One, or Tesla Powerwall 3 — lifts self-consumption above 80% and pays for itself within 5–7 years.
Grants Available in South Gloucestershire
South Gloucestershire Council declared a climate emergency in July 2019 and offers a Warm Homes Local Grant up to £30,000 for eligible homeowners (EPC D–G, income under £36,000). A new Local Grant from April 2025 provides up to £15,000/household for solar PV, battery storage, and insulation. See our solar grants page for current eligibility.
